Owen triumphs in Newbiggin Open

GAVIN Owen made the most of the summer-like conditions in the Newbiggin Open when, fishing at Beadnell, he landed five wrasse and a cod for a weight of 13lb 15oz 2drams to take the first prize of £1,000.

John Ord fished at the Beacons to take second place with three cod for 8-14-10. It was a close call for the heaviest fish with Andrew Hooper just taking it with a cod of 6lb 8oz 6 drams taken at St Mary's, ahead of Aaron Brown with a cod of 6-2-4- taken at Newton.

Energy scheme on its way to Newbiggin

A scheme to help people in Newbiggin cut energy use and bills is on its way.

With the costs of fuel increasing almost by the day, Warm Zone staff have found a scheme to help residents get energy-saving help at a massive reduction and with no money to pay up front.

The scheme, known as Saverbox, is developing as a joint project and it is promised that residents in Northumberland will be able to make big savings on their energy costs and will not have to scrimp and save to do so.

Chris Slaughter was never into football as a lad. When his friends were running around kicking a ball and pretending to be Gary Lineker or Alan Shearer, the young Chris could be found hanging on to his grandmother's apron strings - in the best possible way.

Born and raised on the family poultry farm at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea in Northumberland, a love of the land was instilled in Chris from an early age.

But it was the 29-year-old's paternal grandmother Joan who taught the eager-to-learn youngster to appreciate fine cooking and quality ingredients.

Dog lovers in a seaside village are hoping a town hall shake-up will help overturn a controversial dog-walking ban on the town beach.

The blanket all-year ban covering the revitalised beach in Newbiggin was introduced by Wansbeck Council six months ago, despite a protest petition from 1,000 local dog owners.
