Newbiggin man admits internet fraud

An internet fraudster pillaged a trusting woman's bank account after she told him her bank details.

Janette Patterson, 47, of Ashington, Northumberland, was visiting her cousin in the town when Wayne Johnson offered to help her buy a mobile phone online.

Johnson, 25, of East Lea, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, helped her use the JD Williams home shopping website and make a purchase.

New Northumberland council will keep logo

Northumberland County CouncilNorthumberland's new super council is to retain the existing county council's official logo when it takes over following local government reorganisation in April.

A working group has concluded there is merit in reviewing the 35-year-old logo to ensure it reflects the new unitary council's vision and values.

However, the need to prioritise effective service delivery from April 1 means it will be retained for the time being.

Wansbeck Homes acts on tenants' advice

A Wansbeck housing association is putting up £45,000 for a package of neighbourhood improvements after conducting a series of estate walkabouts with its tenants.

Wansbeck Homes - which manages the district council's 5,300 houses and flats - is acting on improvements suggested by tenants.

Tomorrow will see the launch of a new free newspaper for Journal readers in Northumberland.

Newbiggin man jailed for producing cannabis

Police in Northumberland have warned drug users that crime does not pay after a man was jailed for the production of cannabis.

The 41-year-old Newbiggin man was sentenced this month at Newcastle Crown Court to 12 months in prison, and was forced to pay an £11,263 confiscation order.

He has to pay this amount in six months or face a further 12 months in jail.

Porpoise found dead on Newbiggin beach

A wildlife expert was called in after a dead porpoise washed up on Newbiggin beach.

The dolphin-like creature was found by local resident and photographer Jason Thompson and his ten-year-old son, Oliver.

A call was quickly made Martin Kitching from Northern Experience Wildlife Tours, who measured the creature and tried to determine the cause of death.

Talks are continuing in a bid to resolve a long-running dispute over the fees paid to the owners of independent care homes for the elderly in Northumberland.

Officials from the county council and Care Trust have been in negotiations with dozens of private sector operators for 18 months over how much they should be paid for providing residential care for elderly and disabled people.

Wansbeck set for the silver screen

Residents of Wansbeck are being invited to immortalise their thoughts about the area on film.

The Wansbeck Celebrates! Have Your Say event hopes to encourage participants to think about what they are proud of in Wansbeck.

Production company Arpeggio Films will then record the comments in a series of sessions running at libraries in the area.

Chip pan fireFirefighters are waging a war on chip pans.

The push in south east Northumberland will see some householders given a free thermostatically-controlled deep fat frier in exchange for their old fashioned chip pan.

And shopkeepers who sell chip pans for just a few pounds will be targeted and told of the devastation that can be caused by a kichen blaze.

Peter JacksonConservatives in Northumberland have proposed an alternative council budget which would see a lower tax rise introduced equally across the county.

The Tories have proposed a 3% rise in tax as a key part of their budget suggestions. The ruling Liberal Democrat group recently announced a 4.8% rise alongside service cuts.
