Lifeboat Helm Geoff Leslie had just returned home from hospital with partner Sharon and their newborn daughter - when he was called out to an emergency rescue.

The couple had just got back with new arrival Erin Jean when Geoff received a call that a yacht had run aground on sea defences at Cambois Bay, south of Newbiggin.

The call for assistance was made just before 8pm on Saturday following a distress call to Humber coastguard. The stricken vessel was a 16ft yacht with two people on board which had come ashore on the beach at Sandy Bay Caravan Park.

Would-be Wansbeck MP in favour of new system

A would-be North East MP says he will campaign strongly for an end to the 'first past the post' electoral system if he is successful at the next general election.

Simon Reed, the Liberal Democrats' prospective parliamentary candidate for Wansbeck in Northumberland, says the current system for electing MPs means the votes of a huge number of people across the country can't make any difference to the outcome of elections.

Residents, businesses and organisations across Northumberland are being asked to have their say on a major review which will shape future car parking policy in the county.

County council bosses are undertaking the review in a bid to devise suitable management arrangements for all of the car parks that it owns or manages.

The exercise will also help county councillors decide whether to leave car parking free in Blyth Valley and Wansbeck, or introduce charges similar to those currently facing motorists in towns such as Berwick, Alnwick, Hexham and Morpeth.

Newbiggin lifeboat in action

Newbiggin RNLI Lifeboat Station had two callouts late on Sunday night.

Just before 11pm it went to the aid of the 30ft fishing boat Restless Wave with two people on board after it had suffered engine failure some two miles east of Newbiggin Church Point and was drifting.

The lifeboat towed the Restless Wave into Blyth Harbour.

It was also called to carry out a search north of Blyth before returning back to Newbiggin at about 2am.

The Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is giving people the opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposals for £200m improvements to hospital services.

The NHS proposes a specialist emergency care hospital for people in Northumberland and North Tyneside, improvements to Wansbeck and North Tyneside general hospitals and rebuilding community hospitals in Berwick and Haltwhistle.

The changes would see the closure of emergency departments at Wansbeck and Hexham General.
