Parishioners at a Northumberland seaside village church are preparing to stage their biggest event of the year.

The annual St Bartholomew's Church Fayre in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea takes place from Friday August 28 to Monday 31.

It starts on the Friday with a preview evening for the church flower festival, which this year has the theme of The Surrounding Sea, at 7pm. Admission costs £3 including wine.

People can view the floral displays from 10am to 4pm on the Saturday, noon to 4pm on Sunday and 11am to 4pm on Monday.

On Saturday entries will be accepted from 7.30am to 10.30am for the village show, held in the church centre, with judging taking place at 11am.

Classes include vegetables, cakes, arts and crafts, flowers, photography and a children's section.

People can view the show from 1.30pm to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

On Sunday at 1.30pm a colourful pageant will be held on the seafront, telling the story of the presentation of the Royal charter which granted Newbiggin the right to hold an annual fayre at St Bartholomew's Tide.

On Bank Holiday Monday the fayre itself will be held in the church centre from 11am - 2pm with a variety of stalls, and sale of produce.

Over the whole weekend there will be a display of memorabilia, entitled From Bygone Days, in the church centre cottage.

It includes archive from the opening of Newbiggin Colliery in 1909 and a collection of old photographs.
