Posted by The Journal on Mar 31, 10 03:53 PM in News

Thousands of trees and shrubs will be planted to create a new woodland for residents and visitors in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.

Newbiggin is about to get greener as part of a countywide drive to grow more trees.

The 1.15 hectare site at East Lea Field will be planted with 3,000 native British trees and shrubs to enhance the area and help attract wildlife.

A fundraising link between a Northumberland social club and its local lifeboat station is set to top the £11,000 mark.

Members of the Hirst Progressive Club in Ashington started raising cash for the RNLI station at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea more than a decade ago.

The efforts began after the lifeboat crew was part of a major operation launched when a relative of one of the club's members was swept out to sea and drowned off Cambois.

Chiefs at the agency have warned people living in coastal areas to be on their guard against the possibility of flooding to homes and businesses.

The warning comes as Met Office experts predict that almost a third of the average expected rainfall for March will fall on the region within the next two days.
