Woodland to be created in Newbiggin
Thousands of trees and shrubs will be planted to create a new woodland for residents and visitors in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea.
Newbiggin is about to get greener as part of a countywide drive to grow more trees.
The 1.15 hectare site at East Lea Field will be planted with 3,000 native British trees and shrubs to enhance the area and help attract wildlife.
Today local school children will help Coun Alan Thompson plant the first 300 in partnership with Groundwork North East.
Coun Thompson said: "By planting trees and creating meadowland, we are helping to support the diversity of wildlife, and encouraging wild flowers to support the bee population.
"We are also reducing grass cutting across the county.
This initiative is part of an ongoing plan to plant hundreds of thousands of tress in Northumberland as part of our carbon reduction commitment.''
The project, grant aided by the Forestry Commission, will also provide improved habitat for migratory birds.

Its a very welcome idea as I live next to this area. I would hope they could also incorporate a mountain bike trak and maybe some kind of outdoor activity base/wildlife observatory, lake area so we can enjoy a forest environment. Newbiggin has been sadly lacking in a tree component to its skyline. Just hope the saplings don't get stolen or damaged!...
