Popular choir at St Bartholomew's Church

A popular Tyneside choir will bring the curtain down on a series of summer concerts at a Northumberland seaside church.

The Lemington Male Voice Choir will be singing at St Bartholomew's Church in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea on Sunday at 3pm.

The choir will be conducted by its assistant musical director Michael Scott, and accompanied on keyboard by Jenny Martins.

The evening will include favourites such as Nessun Dorma and Softly As I Leave You.

Tickets, costing £5 and including refreshments, are available from the Rev Judith Grieve or on the door.

Historic Woodhorn Church building targeted

Suspected car thieves have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to a historic church building.

A vehicle was set on fire at the rear of the Grade I-listed Woodhorn Church, between Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and Ashington, Northumberland, destroying one of the stained-glass windows.

The former church, which is one of the oldest on the Northumberland coast with its origins dating back to the 11th Century, has already been targeted on four previous occasions, including incidents where vandals stole lead from the roof and when someone attempted to break in through the front door.

Newbiggin parishioners get ready for fayre

Parishioners at a Northumberland seaside village church are preparing to stage their biggest event of the year.

The annual St Bartholomew's Church Fayre in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea takes place from Friday August 28 to Monday 31.

It starts on the Friday with a preview evening for the church flower festival, which this year has the theme of The Surrounding Sea, at 7pm. Admission costs £3 including wine.

Historic church gates smashed in Newbiggin

Suspected boy racers crashed through the gateway of a historic church in Northumberland.

A Vauxhall van crashed at the Grade I-listed St Bartholomew's Church, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, and knocked down two pillars and the gates.

The vehicle was found ablaze by firefighters at 5.50am on Saturday. The driver had fled the scene.

Calls to remember Northumberland's patron saint

Today marks a special day on the North East calendar as we celebrate the life of the patron saint of Northumberland, St Cuthbert.

Often regarded as the most popular saint of medieval times and one of the most important, March 20 sees people celebrate the anniversary of the death of the region's own patron saint.

Born in 634 AD, Cuthbert was born in the Lammermuir Region where he grew to work as a young shepherd.

Newbiggin lights switched on in special event

Newbiggin Churches Together will host an Advent Sunday on November 30 in the town's Piazza at 6pm.

The evening will see the switching-on of the Christmas lights and the opening of new exhibition "Peace" at the Hidden Gallery.

The Salvation Army Band will play and there will be an opportunity for carol singing.

Both Nevin's Nibbles and the Coble Inn will be open for refreshments.
