From German aircraft landing on rooftops to the VE Day celebrations across the region, a new DVD has been produced to show how the area both suffered and survived the Second World War.

The rare archive footage showing places was brought together to remember how millions of men, women and children coped during one of the worst conflicts in history.

The Journal's photographic archives show how the village looked in years gone by and reflect how the village life has revolved around its fishing industry.

But sadly for three brothers from Northumberland there was to be no dramatic rescue from the hellish trenches of the First World War.

Instead, the Forrest boys from Newbiggin-by-the-Sea were killed in action within months of each other, their deaths separated by hundreds of miles of war-torn Europe.

Jonathan Shipley, pictured, discovered the remarkable tale while researching the town's First World War history.

The black and white posters were put up in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland in the mid-1940s to advertise a Remembrance Sunday parade, a concert in the Co-Op Hall and a youth convention.

Three of the originals were kept by printers Davison's at their Ashington premises, and lay gathering dust for decades until they were found by members of the town's Lions Club about nine years ago.

The Northumberland Miners' Picnic at Bedlington is one such event, with hundreds of pictures in our files.

Many show the bands and mine banners that were the mainstay of an event that at its height - when mining was one of the main industries in south east Northumberland - attracted thousands of spectators.

Coun Devon, now 75, had only been an elected councillor for two years when he took part in the 1974 local government reorganisation, which resulted in the creation of the county's existing six district and borough councils.

As a member of the Ashington Urban District Council, he was part of the process which saw his authority merged with the neighbouring Newbiggin and Bedlingtonshire Urban Councils to create the new Wansbeck District Council.

The DVD, which you can view clips from below, shows children coming out of school in 1927 to youngsters parading behind the band through Ashington main streets in 1959.

Back lanes filled with washing, a colliery band, and miners leaving the pit, the snapshots catch everyday moments from the past.

Amateur photographer and film maker Paul Carr and local historian Mike Kirkup have put together a history of Ashington and Newbiggin-by-the-Sea through photographs and films.
